TOP 3 MUST-WATCH MOVIES FOR HOME BIRTHERS

As a former filmmaker and forever film-lover, moving pictures speak deeply into my heart. We live in a culture flooded with images and these have a powerful effect in us.

During pregnancy, when you're particularly sensitive, the stories you hear and movies you watch work their way into your big picture of birth and can have a deeper impact on you than learning all the science and anatomy of birth.

Taking that into consideration, these 3 movies are my favorite suggestions for people planning a home birth (arranged in my recommended order for watching):

1. WHY NOT HOME?
When you're considering choosing home birth, you will almost always confront some backlash. It often comes from people who genuinely care about your wellbeing, although some people are just nosy. Why Not Home? offers a very well-rounded perspective on the safety of choosing home birth coming from an unexpected source: nurses, doctors and midwives who attend birth in the hospital. This movie is great to watch with a partner if either one or both of you are on the fence about home birth. Learn more in their official website.

When I found I was pregnant, I was so excited to tell everyone I knew. My husband and I had been trying for a year, and I was starting to believe there was a problem. I even started wondering if I would ever have a baby. I went to my doctor with my concerns, had an ultrasound during ovulation, and then scheduled my husband to be tested. It was the very next month that I found out I was pregnant.
To go from fearing the worst of being infertile to finding out I was pregnant led to an amazing high. The relief was extraordinary.

THE DOES AND DON'TS BEGAN
Something happened after about a month. People started telling me what to do or what not to do. This came from family, friends, and co-workers. One day, I was sitting at my desk at work enjoying a nice beefy hamburger, and my co-worker said, “You shouldn’t eat that because you’ll be so devastated when you can't fit into your old jeans again.” I was shocked.

As I was developing my birth plan, I researched doulas and realized how awesome giving birth would be with one. My husband was onboard with it, and I was happy that I would have the support, encouragement and advice of someone who truly knew me, and cared about me and my baby. I also researched some other ways to have a baby, such as in water. What a magical experience to have your baby go from amniotic fluid inside the womb to warm water outside of it. What could be a more perfect transition? So, once I had my birth plan all laid out, I started telling people who asked.

Of course, I was met with opposition. Most of the people didn’t know how a doula helps, but they had their opinions about one. It infuriated me. I spoke to a mom friend who said that this is completely normal and will happen often in motherhood.
She was so right. As soon as I had McKayla, people were throwing advice at me left and right. Some of it was okay, but some of it seemed more like they were trying to tell me what I was doing was wrong.

THE   #1   THING   I   WISH   I   HAD   KNOWN   ABOUT   BABY   POOP

OUR JOURNEY WITH ELIMINATION COMMUNICATION
Picture
The number one thing I wish I had known before the birth of my son is that you can start potty training babies right after they are born.
Ok, not really. It’s not potty training. It’s really more like a parent training in which you pay very, very close attention to your child so that you can put them over a sink or a bowl when they need to eliminate.

In case you have never heard about this before, in the Western World this “method” is known as Elimination Communication (EC), Diaper Free Baby, or Natural Infant Hygiene. Amongst most indigenous people around the world, EC doesn’t even have a name because it is the norm.
I know this must sound crazy to most people, and you might be wondering why in the world would you want to sit around waiting for your baby to fart or kick his/her legs in a particular way when we are blessed with the miracle of diapers?
Well, there are many reasons.

The PStyle: the ultimate pee-freedom device

Traveling while pregnant

Anyone who has been pregnant knows of the seemingly never stopping need to pee. And you need to remember to drink a lot of water and stay hydrated, which doesn't make it any easier. It’s kind of a hassle, but not such a big deal when there is a nearby toilet.

But what about when you’re outside, it’s cold and there is no bathroom available? And you really can’t wait much longer! Well, let me share a tip with you about a very special piece of plastic that made my nomadic, outdoorsy pregnancy into a peeing freedom journey.

I was 24-years-old and living in Mexico City when I got my first PStyle from my friend Elisa. It was wrapped in a beautiful flower-print cloth baggie that looked a lot like a glasses case.
I didn’t have any idea what it was, so I examined the plastic funnel in search of something that would give me a clue about its use.
Elisa kept on smiling widely. She seemed pretty amused at my confusion.
“Do you know what it is?” She asked.
I shook my head.
