Although we know enough about oxytocin to be able to create a synthetic substitute in a lab (Pitocin), there is also a lot about it that is magic and mysterious. Feeling held, loved, protected, and embraced during birth is something that we can't bottle.
I recently had the honor of supporting and photographing this beautiful birth at The Birth House in Olympia, WA. I loved getting to witness the amazing connection between Mica and her husband, Zach. Oxytocin, the "hormone of love" is what initiates labor and keeps the contractions coming strong and steady. Although we know enough about oxytocin to be able to create a synthetic substitute in a lab (Pitocin), there is also a lot about it that is magic and mysterious. Feeling held, loved, protected, and embraced during birth is something that we can't bottle. Mica and Zach labored beautifully and welcomed their baby, Javier, with love accompanied by a wonderful team of midwives.
